HOTELS
FOR SAME-SEX
COUPLES
THING
TO KNOW
You do not need to search only for a “gay hotel” to travel Japan as a couple.
Start the same way you would for any trip: choose the neighborhood, reserve the room for two adults and select the room type that works for you.
An LGBTQ+ friendly label can be reassuring, but location, privacy, bed type and the experience you want from the hotel may matter even more.
YOU DON’T NEED
A “GAY HOTEL.”
YOU NEED THE
RIGHT HOTEL.
A hotel near Shinjuku Ni-chome may be perfect for nightlife. A modern ryokan may give you the Japanese experience you came for. A premium lifestyle hotel can make the room itself part of the trip.
TWO PEOPLE.
ONE ROOM.
The practical part is simple: make the reservation for two adults and choose the correct room.
BOOK FOR TWO.
Do not book a single-occupancy rate and arrive with two people. Enter the correct number of guests when reserving.
CHOOSE THE ROOM.
Double, queen, king or twin: choose the bed arrangement you actually want.
JUST CHECK IN.
Have the reservation name and any required identification ready. There is normally no need to explain your relationship.
DOUBLE
OR
TWIN?
In Japan, these words describe the beds — not your relationship.
A double room usually means one bed designed for two people. A twin room means two separate beds.
Couples choose both. Friends choose both. Pick the room based on comfort, price and how you like to sleep.
Usually one larger bed for one or two guests. Bed width varies by hotel.
Two separate beds. Often useful when you want more individual sleeping space.
LGBTQ+
FRIENDLY?
The label is useful. It is not the only way to choose a hotel.
Some hotels actively communicate support for LGBTQ+ guests, Pride events or local queer culture. That can be a strong signal that the hotel has thought about the guest experience.
But a hotel that does not advertise itself with an LGBTQ+ label is not automatically unsuitable.
Look at the whole stay: location, service, room type, privacy and what you want to do once you step outside.

YOU WANT
TO WAKE UP?
RYOKAN
&
ONSEN.
A ryokan can be one of the most memorable nights of a Japan trip.
Many ryokan and onsen hotels use gender-separated public baths. If you want private time together, look for an in-room bath or a reservable private bath.
You may see the Japanese term kashikiri-buro — a bath reserved privately for a guest or group for a set period.
Private bathing can be especially useful for couples who want an intimate onsen experience without using a shared public bath.
LOVE
HOTELS
A love hotel is not the same thing as an ordinary hotel.
Love hotels developed around privacy and short private stays. Rooms may be larger, more playful or more heavily equipped than standard city hotel rooms.
You will often see two concepts: a short stay and an overnight stay.
Same-sex policies and booking systems vary by property. Some facilities are easy for same-sex couples to use, while others may have different entry or booking procedures. Check current information first.
A room used for a limited number of hours.
An overnight stay, usually within specified check-in and check-out periods.
PUBLIC
AFFECTION
IN JAPAN.
Public affection in Japan tends to be more restrained than in some countries, including among heterosexual couples. Holding hands is one thing; very intimate behavior in public may attract attention. Read the setting rather than assuming every reaction is about sexuality.
STAY CLOSE
TO THE NIGHT.
For gay nightlife, Shinjuku gives you a useful triangle: Shinjuku Ni-chome, Shinjuku-sanchome and Kabukicho. You do not need to sleep directly above a gay bar to stay close to the action.

HOTEL
MEETS
NI-CHOME.
Kimpton is a useful example of what “LGBTQ+ friendly” can mean beyond a sticker.
The hotel does not simply sit in the same city as Ni-chome. Its current guest-experience program explicitly introduces visitors to Shinjuku’s LGBTQ+ district and AiSOTOPE LOUNGE.
For GAY JAPAN, that makes it a particularly clear example of a mainstream premium hotel treating queer nightlife as part of the destination.
SLEEP
NEAR
DOYAMA.
Doyama sits inside the wider Umeda nightlife area. Staying around Higashi-Umeda, Sonezaki, Toganocho or Kamiyamacho makes walking home after a night out much easier.
